Combining BCI with Virtual Reality: Towards New Applications and Improved BCI

چکیده
Historically, the main goal of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) research was, and still is, to design communication, control and motor substitution applications for patients with severe disabilities [75]. These last years have indeed seen tremendous advances in these areas with a number of groups having achieved BCI control of prosthetics, wheelchairs and spellers, among other [49]. More recently, new applications of BCI have emerged that can be of benefit to both patients and healthy users alike, notably in the areas of multimedia and entertainment [51]. In this context,

Combining BCI and Virtual Reality: Scouting Virtual Worlds
23.1 Abstract A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a closed-loop system with feedback as one important component. Dependent on the BCI application either to establish communication in patients with severe motor paralysis, to control neuroprosthesis, or to perform neurofeed-back, information is visually fed back to the user about success or failure of the intended act. One way to realize feedback...
متن کاملBrain-CAVE Interface Based on Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential
Recently, a new modality of the human-computer interface has been more and more emerging; The Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The BCI is a communication channel, which enables us to send commands to external devices by using human brain activities (Wolpaw et al., 2002). As one of the remarkable achievements, we can see the report on invasive Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) (Hochberg et al., 2006)...
متن کاملBrain-Computer Interfacing and Virtual Reality
Brain-computer interface (BCI) and virtual reality (VR) are natural companions. BCI provides a new interaction technique for controlling VR, and VR provides a rich feedback environment for BCI while retaining a controlled and safe environment. The combination of VR and BCI allows for providing participants with novel experiences that are impossible otherwise. Both fields still pose many technol...
متن کاملRobotic and Virtual Reality BCIs Using Spatial Tactile and Auditory Oddball Paradigms
The paper reviews nine robotic and virtual reality (VR) brain-computer interface (BCI) projects developed by the author, in collaboration with his graduate students, within the BCI-lab research group during its association with University of Tsukuba, Japan. The nine novel approaches are discussed in applications to direct brain-robot and brain-virtual-reality-agent control interfaces using tact...
متن کاملHuman-Computer Interface Issues in Controlling Virtual Reality With Brain-Computer Interface
We have integrated the Graz brain-computer interface (BCI) system with a highly-immersive virtual reality (VR) Cave-like system. This setting allows for a new type of experience, whereby participants can control a virtual world using imagination of movement. However, current BCI systems still have many limitations. In this paper we present two experiments exploring the different constraints pos...
